Our corporate HQ proudly encapsulates a little piece of Salt Lake and Graystone related history…
The Vincent Drug sign. In the 1940s and ’50s, when Salt Lake Valley residents were craving a cherry Coke or chocolate malt, they’d head over to Midvale’s Vincent Drug. The store, which you may recognize from appearances in the films The Sandlot, Halloween 4 & 5, The Stand, and numerous TV shows, operated as a family business for over three generations.
To give you a brief history of Vincent Drug, the store originally was opened as a saloon in 1911 by Willis Vincent. When prohibition came along, Willis changed the saloon into a drug store. He ran the store until he became ill and then sold ½ of the business to his brother-in-law Harry Miller and the store changed its name to Miller-Vincent Drug. When Willis died, Harry changed the name to Miller Drug. A few years later when Harry retired, he sold the store to his nephew Norval Vincent and he, in turn, changed the name to Vincent Drug.
So how does Graystone factor into this whole story? Norval is the grandfather of Kipp Myers, the founding owner and President of Graystone Mortgage. Graystone’s chance acquisition of the sign was somewhat serendipitous. In November of 2016, Kipp was notified that everything from the drug store was being sold by a company who handles estate sales. As you can imagine, there was quite a bit of interest from people who wanted a piece of history, or to at least buy some of the items that had been in the store for years- it was a virtual time capsule. At the time, the lounge had not yet been envisioned, and Kipp and Danell only purchased a few knick-knacks. A few months later, Kipp and Danell were out decor browsing for the lounge and Kipp mentioned he wished they would have purchased the Vincent Drug marquee or one of the other signs to add to the lounge. Later that afternoon they were in Sugar House and stopped through an antique shop. To their great surprise, there was the Vincent Drug sign! A picker had acquired it during the estate sale, and it made its way into the shop. Needless to say, Kipp and Danell were very excited, and purchase the signed. The rest is history… for all of us to admire! They are happy the sign is back with family and to have the opportunity to share it with our Graystone family.
It was a delight working with Danell Myers and her staff. Everyone was professional, friendly, and above all so efficient. I also love how much we can do over the Internet like signing papers, which made the process so much simpler. Please know your company has already had many praises from us to our friends.
